Does the mower charge the battery ?

re: my Webb (Qualcast really) Diplomat 430E... (withoout the E)

If I did get a battery for it, does the mower motor have a charging circuit ?

i.e. does it keep the battery charged, or does it need to be periodically recharched from an external charger ?

Appologies for this basic question, but I don't have a manual.

Fairly certain that machine would have had a charging coil under the flywheel with the ignition stator. May also have come with an auxillary mains charger for use if the battery should become discharged.

One of the problems with many domestic electric start machines is/was that the charging systems were fairly marginal and needed 10/15 minutes running to put back into the battery what was extracted by one start up.  Couple this with operator presence controls ("dead man's handles) that stop the machine if released  to empty the grass box and it was possible for the battery to become run down - particularly with heavy grass growth or leaf collecting resulting in frequent emptying.

No operator presence controls on this old beast !
