My guess is that the nut is screwed on with a left hand thread so that the action of kick starting the engine will tighten it. It will probably be fairly tight so if you have a decent sized ring spanner try shocking it off by striking the spanner with a copper faced or dead blow hammer.

The sleeve may free with a bit of gentle heat but even if you have access to something quite fierce beware of softening the spring. An alternative is  to find a substantial bit of iron to act as an anvil and rest the cylindrical part on it and then hit opposite it with a drift and lump hammer. (usual hand and eye protection etc). Rotate the sleeve and and hit it several times from different directions and hopefully this will shock it enough to break the rust bond between it and the shaft. Then if necessary leave it in a bath of diesel or heating oil for a day or two in the hope that it will creep between the shaft and sleeve.

Hi ,

Thanks for the response ,am at work now until Monday so will look again then. The nut seems to be flush against a keyway which is why I was not sure if it screw off or pull.

Cheers Mark
