Can you identify these mowers ?

Greetings Mower people !

I have just acquired two mowers and would be most grateful if anyone can help to identify them as a first step in getting further technical information.

The first is a Webb 14". The plate shows the number L23974 - is this the model number ? Pictures below. The cover on the air filter on the carburettor says "Delorto F48". The engine block is painted golden. Is it a B&S engine ? I can't find any B&S identification numbers.

The second is an ATCO and appears to be somewhat older. The label on the side shows the numbers 6221R  and 411D 57653. The HT lead shows the name Villiers - is it a Villiers engine ?

Any help in identifying these will be much appreciated. Both are non runners but I hope to get them going.

That L number is a factory production number which presumably meant something to the factory but was not that much use for identifying the machine for obtaining parts etc as none of the hard copy or micro fiche lists used it as a reference. The " gold" engine is basically a Tecumseh built to a Webb and Atco specification.

The older machine is an Atco with a Villiers engine. If you look at the right hand chassis side plate there is an L shaped tag which is possibly stamped with numbers representing the width of cut and year of manufacture eg 1758 - 17" cut, 1958.

Thanks Wristpin. You were right about the L shaped label.

So - 1962, but the cut width is only about 12 inches. I think this is exactly the same model as shown in another thread in this forum that you have already commented on.

The carburettor is a Villiers S10/2 but I still haven't identified the model for either the engine or the mower.

There's a couple of things on the engine that puzzle me. There is something that looks like the hand pump that you could find on those old Tilley pressure lamps. It's located close to the oil dipstick. Although the cap turns it does not appear to either tighten or loosen. It is attached to a rod that has about 1/4" movement in and out of the engine casing.

Also, just under the exhaust port there is a plastic cover of some sort, held in place with a spring.

What are these things please ?

As usual - all information gratefully received.

James

It is a 14 inch Atco fitted with a Villiers lightweight engine, sorry but I cannot remember whether it is 50 or 75cc. The first thing is the oil filler plug and it should pull out. the cover you refer to is the valve chest cover, behind it are the valve stems & springs.
