Cylinder sharpening

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

There is possibly a thread or link on the site to answer this but I couldn't find it.

Where can I get my Suffolk Colt cylinder sharpened? It's quite rusty and only cuts paper in parts of the blade. I've sharpened the bottom blade using a rotary mower sharpener attached to my drill.

I'm based in South London but can travel.

Thanks in advance!

You just need to find a proper mower work shop that deals with cylinder mowers. Some grinding machines do the job with the cutting cylinder still in the chassis while others require it to be removed but the upside of that is  that gives access to check the bearings etc.

To make the best of the newly sharpened cylinder the bottom blade really should be skimmed on a proper re- facing grinder so that it is absolutely true

Thanks for the explanation. I've been quoted £65 by Austin Mowers. Seems a bit steep. Am I right or is this reasonable? If I'm right any suggestion of where else I could try in London?

Thanks in advance!

Is that for  giving them the machine to get on with . If so seems reasonable . You could possibly halve that by stripping the cylinder out your self and getting it done for cash.
