fitting a new head gasket

I've got a new head gasket for my Villiers lightweight engine and I was wondering about the procedure for fitting it. Does it just go in dry or greased or even with some sealant? The old one was really hard to get off the block and it started me wondering...

Clean all traces of the old gasket off both faces and give the head a rub over a sheet of fine wet or dry on a face plate ( either the proper thing or a piece of plate glass or even a piece of thick ply) to check/ eliminate any warping.  The text books will say put a new gasket on dry but I tend to put the merest smear of grease on  both sides of the gasket.
