Removing the rear roller from Suffolk Punch 17"

Hi all,

I've been reading and enjoying the restoration & repair postings about these old lawnmowers for quite some time, and it's evident this is the place to be for expert advice. I have a Suffolk 17" Super Punch that has been in the family for decades. It's finally forcing me to do some TLC on it; the rear roller (plain steel drum, not the ribbed alloy) is starting to crack (looks like its along the original weld). I need to remove it to have it repaired.  How do I go about doing that? I don't want to disassemble the mower more than I need to, so I'm hoping someone here who has done it before can point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Chris

OK, put the machine on a workbench, disconnect the throttle from the engine, remove the handles. remove the engine (you could leave the engine bolted to the plate, but you will end up glad you removed it). Remove chain cover, remove the chain that drives the rear roller, remove the sprocket and everything else that has anything to do with the roller. Now go to the other side of the machine and remove all the bolts, nuts etc that hold the non drive frameside on, pull off the frameside, remove the roller. Turn around, look at the pile of bits you have removed and ask yourself 'I wonder if I can put it back together again'  ;-)

Thanks for the info. I was afraid it might involve the removal of all the little bits.... but had to ask just in case there was a "less than obvious" shortcut.
