Suffolk Colt smoking

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

Hi there,

ive just brought 2 Suffolk colts to life after years of standing. Both run well, but both smoke, I think, excessively. I ran both on tick over, with the occasional stop/start, and rev up, for over an hour the other day. Both smoked ( big puff when I revved them), but neither used any oil according to the dipstick

Any clues?

A couple of thoughts.

Take the sumps off, thoroughly clean them and refill with SAE 30 monograde oil.

Work them really hard for a while.

Don't worry about them!

My thoughts were that, as oil wasn't being used they're probably just 'clearing their lungs' after so long in hibernation. Thanks for the back up

i also lapped in the exhaust valve in one of them that had no compression. It looked like a lump of coal sitting in the port and was doing nothing. I replaced the original head gasket though. Think I'll be getting a new one!
