end float in large central cogDear forum. I am currently rebuilding a Super Punch Professional. Ive noticed as I was reassembling that the large central cog, (seen in the photo with brown grease on it) has some end float of approximately 3 to 4 mm. Is this normal? I wondered if it was a deliberate thing to help reduce chain wear allowing the cog to self align??

Thanks

Unintentionally self aligning - I wouldn't worry about it. However excessive end float on the rear roller shaft can make adjustment of the dog clutch tricky. Best eliminated by shimming at the clutch end but less dismantling required at the other end. I've even seen the float eliminated with a large E clip pushed over the shaft - no dismantling needed!

Hello wristpin,

thanks for responding. I noticed during the strip down a soft felt washer placed in between the main side casting and the steel side plate (drive/cog side). Does this serve a purpose?  I wondered if this was anything to do with afore mentioned end float?

thanks.
