DOES ANYONE KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A  75CC CAM & A 98CC CAM BOTH HAVE THE SAME NO

OF TEETH 36 ? BUT THE CAM LUGS LOOK A BIT LARGER. BOTH CAMS HAVE THE  75CC OR 98CC  STAMP ON THEM

The short answer to your question is no, but I would be inclined to compare the two camshafts side by side. You have stated that the gear has the same number of teeth, the cam lobes need to be measured for the height of lift. If the lift or height of the cam lobes is the same I would try it in the engine, assuming that it turns over ok and nothing fouls the casings then I can see no harm in giving it a try. Unless of course someone comes up with differrent advice.  Ray.

Can say for sure that at one point in the long production life of those engines the cams had different part numbers. (1967 parts lists)

98G E8209 and 75G E3510

So I would think it safe to assume there were differences but what they were will only be revealed by detailed comparison.

You've spotted possible differences in the cam profile  - may be worth checking the position of the timing marks in relation to the cams or the flywheel keyway.

Hi guys thanks for your input .Looked hard at both cams could not find a difference

between them so assembled engine & started her up.  Runs a treat so thanks hillsider &

wristpin.

That's good news, just goes to show what one can get away with! Won't bore everyone with the details but some years ago did a "charity job" and built up a running BS 3.5 hp for a Hayterette from the parts of at least 3 "scrap" engines and as far as I know it is still running!

This is good news.  I have just re-assembled my 17" Suffolk Punch Dual Drive which has a 75cc cast iron engine 75G14 and it runs OK, but it has a broken tooth in the cam drive and the gears are very thin.

I have a spare 98cc crankshaft labelled JS and E3524/5 and camshaft and the only problem with them is that the thread has gone for the flywheel fixing nut.  I can't rethread it as its a reverse thread.  I have ordered some gaskets and was hoping to chance my luck.

This is the broken tooth on the camshaft (right gear) - what do you dentists think?

It is difficult to judge the condition of the gear teeth from your photo but from what I can see and the the fact that you say it runs ok I would be inclined to leave things as they are until you are forced to do a repair, by which time you may have sourced another engine or usable parts for this one. It appears that there is about one third of the broken tooth remaining on the cam gear. If this is the case it is possibly enough to share the load with the teeth either side of it due the helical design of the gear teeth this would be why the engine still runs. It would be sensible to remove any sharp edges from the broken gear tooth also check the remaining gear teeth for damage and clean them as needed.

Hi There hillsider  obtained 98cc engine found out that there was far to much valve clearence

on both  valves . Had someone ground the valve stem bottoms to much?.

So stripped engine completely  piston ok, rings well within limits, bore ok

crank ok . black soot  and gunge  every where must have run like a pig.IF it ran at all

So onto the cam shaft the lubes or lugs looked quite worn compared to a 75cc

camshaft so hence the question. It must have thrown the timing out  retarding the engine

quite a lot as i have re assembled and run for one hour . runs well . So to sum it all up

will  the 98cc cam work in another 98cc engine time will tell when one comes along.

the 98cc lubes are not so pointed as a 75cc cam more flater across top is this hard ware?

Have not got another 98cc cam to compare it with.If i had to give a honest answer

someone  (f) up big time  on the valves.hope this inlightens you a bit,  i lke yourself

require satisfaction on the outcome of the said task.  thanks ROB

Hi There inclined to agree with hillside  source  same engine, plenty of them about

and replace  checking cam wear  etc  or  use engine  till something gives then

just replace  the whole engine .rob
