Collection, Preservation and Display of Old Lawn Mowers

Hello!

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

Morning all hope your all keeping well in these uncertain times. My name is Rob and I have a keen interest in older items such as machinery and vehicles so thought I would sign up and gain a bit of knowledge on old lawn mowers! I only have one in my collection at the moment which is a Suffolk super swift which I saved from a pile of scrap at a local cricket club! I will get some pictures of it up later on. Anyway just wanted to say hi and look forward to seeing what you all have in your collections. Thanks Rob.

Hi Rob. Welcome to the club. Thought you might find the info that appeared in a 1958 Suffolk advertising leaflet that I have interesting?  Cheers. Rob

Hi Rob, I am a Suffolk mower fan, and use the smaller 10inch swift at home as the Super Swift is too heavy for the misses, both great mowers and easy to work on and maintain. It's great to hear another mower isn't destined for the scrap man. The search box on this website will give you links to different threads for the Suffolk Super Swift from previous forum posts.

Evening chaps well here she is in all her glory! As you can see she needs a bit of tlc but everything still rolls freely and cuts. Unfortunately I am missing the grass box and the wooden roller will need replacing but it is a work in progress which I will start over the next couple of evenings. Cheers Rob.

Hi hope your all well? Haven't managed to get started on the swift this week unfortunately due to other commitments. Whilst browsing eBay last night however I have purchased the grass box for this machine. It looks to be in good condition so at least I will have a complete mower. Hopefully I will get a chance this weekend to have a play! Thanks Rob.

Hi Rob.

Glad you found a grass box for your mower. With regard to the wooden roller, I have had replacement rollers for various push mowers I have had / have from Mike Floody, an OLMC member and have always been pleased with them and have, just this week, ordered some for a Webb Witch that I have from him. The link below is for Mikes site..

Hi Rob

Thanks very much for the link I will have a look at that tonight.

Really pleased I managed to find the grass box, it looks in pretty good condition as well so that's always a good start. Just need to find some time to start the restoration now!

Thanks again, Rob.

Finally managed to get some time to strip the super swift down. Nothing is broken and everything came apart nicely. Need to start cleaning it all up now ready for painting. With regards to the grips on the handles, is there anywhere that makes these the same as the originals? Or is it a case of finding something similar? The box has arrived and is in really good condition, really pleased with that! Thanks Rob.

Hi Rob. If the original handle grips were rubber (I don't know if they were or not) but, if they were you could try J. Price  Bath Ltd, 01225 742141. I had some rubber handle grips off them for a JP Maxees that I had and was pleased with them. Cheers. Rob
