Any ideas what this is please, just acquired this and haven’t a clue what it is. It had a Briggs engine on it that is now being restored. I thought it was an Allen national at first but I don’t think it is now. Any ideas would be appreciated

Toro 58, 5HP B&S, the only machine I know that had a decal saying Professional, and was only sold by Toro domestic dealers

I remember having one in for a service and sharpen in the early 80s and being taken aback by the even then mega cost of the combine bottom blade and sole plate units. Also seem to remember that the spherical “ constant velocity” couplings for the wing units were fairly pricey too.

Oh yes, there was nothing cheap about a Toro 58 and the 70 even more so.

Numerous chains, belts and ball joints, a steering cable that tended wear quickly if not kept clean and the phosphor bronze balls on the front cylinders. Then there is the rather unique reverse method, pull the driven drive pulley into the engine pulley, a sure way to ensure wear ;-)

I sure hope you have got deep pockets if you are going refurbish it, one hint, do not buy genuine Toro bushes, bearings and chains, they are all available from good bearing factors. I also seem to remember replacing the ball joints with rose joints.

Thanks for that. It arrived without the two front cutting units as well. I think I might be a long way off with this one.
