Ransomes question

I'm in the process of acquiring a Ransomes Meteor Four, with 24" cut and JAP engine, in what looks to be fairly decent condition.

I'm struggling to find info on this site or the web in general, what's the difference between it and a Ransomes Matador please, and any idea what sort of vintage it will be?

I’ve worked on a few JAP engined Metors and a lot of MAG engined Matadors and as far as I remember other than the engine there’s not a lot of difference. I’ve got parts books for both if you want to do a part by part comparison .

Both good for their generation. No straight answer, an old JAP that’s been well maintained may out live a younger MAG that’s gone without oil changes and air cleaner maintenance. I’m not sure what the MAG parts supply is these days but if I were looking for a collector’s machine I might tend to favour the JAP.  Sorry, but I’m not going to say, do this or that!

Thanks again! Well it's far too big for my lawn so I'll probably move it on, will need to see if it runs first and have a bit of a tinker. I'll post some pics when I get it
