Wallis Binch
You may be forgiven for thinking at first sight that this is just another 'catalogue mower' or for newcomers a mower manufactured by one of the major manufacturers for catalogues or large retail businesses. I certainly thought it was - how wrong was I . I bought it as it was cheap enough and was intrigued by the name Binch. Wallis Binch were manufacturers of manual roller and sidewheel mowers in the 1930s. The company was based at New Basford in Nottingham, and products included the Binch "Model B" sidewheel mower and the "Grasshopper" roller mower. Also referred to as "British Binch". My example is a 10" cut. I have no other information about this mower as to whether other sizes were available or cost or whether throw plates etc were available. I cannot find any more information anywhere. I am really going to stick my neck out and say that the quality of this mower is exceptional and as far as to say I think this is the best quality sidewheel mower I have ( I've got a few to compare) I would really recommend one of these little sidewheels for anyone's collection. That's a great point Rob, another make that springs to mind are the Presto's made by Arundel Coulthard, on some of their premium models such as the De-luxe, Lornmo, Grasmo & Turfmo they fitted land wheels with a similar helical tread and stated that it gave a surer ground-grip requiring less tractive effort in use.
These models were around in the mid 1930's so JP no doubt got their idea from them ?

I have always admired your JP Matchless but hadn't noticed the chevron tread pattern before. I've looked at all my older sidewheels and indeed edgers and none have your style of tread. I've just acquired a Greens Edger for a friend as part of a bigger deal and although it is the improved model with ribbed tread roller, the tread is not slanted. To be honest I can't see any advantage of this style of tread on an edger but can possibly on a mower where two wheels are involved. I've included photos of my Greens edger with tread and another earlier version without.

Like your Greens edgers Sean, compliment your Greens mower collection very nicely. I only have one hand held edger, an ATCO but am keeping my eyes peeled for the edger made by HRG purely as I like the look of it having seen one on the site some time ago.

Great looking mower Sean. I have noticed that the Side Wheel mowers I have seen all have the same Wheel Tread pattern.... as on yours. My JP Matchless has the Tread Pattern at a slight angle, not sure if that offered any advantages?
