Hi all

I have an Atoc Commodore B17 in good condition apart from the engine which has the ignition striped by the previous owner when it failed to start. The engine type A114-1a looks like the Suffolk aluminum engine painted gold. There for would the ignition setup from a Suffolk A98 electronic ignition ,(of which I have a donor unit),bolt on and work correctly .Are there any issues with the timing etc. Also both have a Dellorto  carb, are these interchangeable.

  Thanks guys

If the Delorto carb is original, then it probably is an A114. The A114 replaced the A98 and the A98 used a different carb. There were two different electronic ignition systems used on the A114 and they are interchangeable, provided you change the stator plate and the flywheel.

Thanks Hortimesh. I will change the stator plate and flywheel as a pair.

Update on the suffolk ignition swap.Pulled down the A98 engine today and you guys are correct,re the items ,(flywheel and ignition unit) have to be changed  as a set.The flywheels look identical , but closer inspection shows the key slot in a slightly different position relative to the magnets, see photos. The A114 is on the left, the A98 on the right. The coil units are obviously different. Also in picture is the Suffolk Punch 35s which had to die to donate its organs. But its not too bad a mower base , so I may reincarnate the poor thing with a 75G14 engine, (I have a shed load of these). Will post results in due course.

Atco commodore update .Ignition parts from the donor engine now fitted and we have sparks. noticed on rebuild a resistor type plug fitted .(bs19LMR)so have changed to the correct type, could this be a cause for the coil unit failure? I seem to remember that our little engines don't like such things, also it has a suppressor cap fitted ,is this correct?

The original equipment plug was of a non-resistor type. I've no information as to whether the fitting of a resistor one could lead to coil failure but I suspect not, but fitting of both a resistor plug and plug cap is not desirable.

I've lost track a bit as to what system you have ended up with - resistive or capacitive - but if you refer to the scanned bulletins that I posted earlier in this thread you will see that during the evolution of the engine the plug gap changed from 25 to 40 thou - and then back to 25. Make sure that you are using the appropriate gap for the system fitted.
