Hello and thank you for letting in your group. I seen this listed in a local buy & sell and caught my attention as I  enjoy bringing old vintage rusty things back to life. I spent some time reading through your technical section and was able to get timing set up and running. Its starts right up if you flood the carb and have full choke on. The problem I am having is it won't run without throttle just slightly open and moving choke from closed to just slightly open back and forth. I did a compression test and it has 90 lbs,  carb cleaned out. Any thoughts on what the problem might be would greatly appreciated. Also is there a source for rings and crank seals. Thank you

Welcome.

I presume that it is a trick of the camera that the carburettor looks to be out of vertical. If, with it correctly positioned you still have the problem , I suggest that you check the fuel flow from the tank followed by  careful dismantling and thorough cleaning of the carb.

Hi thanks for the comment, yes the carb is not vertical in picture, sorry these where picture when I picked it up. Carb was vertical when tested, fuel line is full, float bowl full. Carb was taken apart and cleaned very basic carb. That's what puzzles me

May be worth removing the exhaust and checking that the port is not blocked ,also the muffler itself can coke up. I think that you will find that the muffler takes apart.

Thanks for the suggestion I've done that also, the piston looked good also when I had it off, no scoring

What's the condition of the tank? It only takes a tiny speck of rust or debris to block the carb.

Re-reading that, and assuming it's not being starved of fuel, it seems that the engine wants a very rich mixture. In that case it appears that something is making it run lean. Leaky cases/seals/gaskets is a common problem with old two strokes. This includes leaks around the carb to intake port connection, too.

Hello gtc I give that a try sealing up the carb to intake better and see if that helps. The tapper needle I see is a # 3 in the carb 10-1 ratio as I understand. Would that be correct. Also I don't really think it has any serious leaks anywhere as it will start right up no problem,  and my thinking  is if it has leaky issues it probably would not start  or be very difficult to start because of lost pressure.

So this carb has me baffled as to why it doesn't work. I finally Jimmy rigged a carb I had off a 90cc bike and the little engine purrs along perfectly as it should without any choke. At least know I know it's a carb issue thx for all your input

Am I right in thinking that the taper needle in the throttle slide is adjustable with a small slot head screw accessed from the top of the slide? If this is the case it may be worth undoing the adjusting screw a bit to allow the spring loaded needle to rise and richen the mixture.. I presume that when you cleaned the carb, you did remove the "centre piece / main jet" and check for obstruction of the peripheral drillings, likewise the two compensating tubes / pilot jets..

Merry Christmas to everyone

Hello wristpin

You are correct that is the style and I have give it a try.  One thing I have noticed with my many times taking this apart is it appears someone maybe has taken a drill bit to possibly clean the centre tube jet and has drilled it out oversize. I have no way of measuring very accurately other than by using a drill bit. The hole is some where between 3 /32 and 7/64th. The 3/32 is very sloppy and the 7/64 wont fit. I was hoping maybe someone could confirm this and give me an idea of size it should be so I could plug and redrill out just to see if that is the problem. If that gets me fired up then I know I am on the right track and try to source a new center tube. Thanks

Unfortunately none of my books show sizing for the jets .

It does appear that your carb could either be a Lightweight or a Junior  and my manuals show  differences in the length of protrusion of the needle from the slide .

Junior, No.2 set 31/32" out

Lightweight, No3 set  2&1/8 " out

Hi my carb has a # v508ca, and my needle will only protrude 26/32 any more and the needle wedges into the jet . Is it possible that it is the wrong needle. Looks like the junior

More likely that my info is incorrect for your carb! I am not aware of having any info that specifically relates to your numbers but I will have a look. Paul at Meetens is your most likely source of information but I think that he may be shut until the New Year.
