Atco 'light' 1453 kickstart spring

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

Just purchased an Atco Light 2 stroke mower plated as 1453. Unfortunately the kickstart spring has gone. Jon Cruse in Horsham no longer has any stock and John Gregory at the Old Lawnmower Company only has sufficient for their own restorations.

Does anybody else stock springs? The machine will kick over, and a bungee cord aids the spring return, but it hardly looks the pinnacle of British Engineering!

Jon had 100 springs made many years ago, he may consider having some more made - but how many machines are there out there will need a replacement spring? I have an Atco B13, plated 14/5960 with kickstart, does anyone know whether it uses the same spring as the Atco Light?

Just about every kickstart Atco I have been involved with needed a new spring (one previous owner had welded a rope start pulley onto the shaft). I bought some of those springs from Jon years ago. I did wonder what sort of supply he had.

Pity he's run out. I wonder what he'd consider an economical quantity to have made?

My late Father purchased a similar spring that was sold for another application. He heated the spring with a blow lamp and uses pliers to shape it on the mower. I still have it Working on  his mower nearly 30 years on. Maybe that would solve your problems. There are companies who specialise in springs.

Don't get too excited, these are NOT Atco springs but I have a few and if anyone would like one  they are free for the cost of the postage.

They look familiar, Hayter Condor wheel propelled ratchet springs ???

May well be but they came to me in a job lot of stuff cleared out of the premises of a former mower repairer. They do have a bit of green paint on them but everything else in the lot was very much domestic and there are 10 of them .Other items include 10 Suffolk throttle cables , Two speed and single speed Harrier clutch cables and a couple of dozen assorted Concorde belts!  Oh, and a dozen Suffolk/Zenith carb floats!

An interesting photo Angus...it made me wonder what gems we might all find if we turned out our "spares drawer" occasionally!  Perhaps the club should maintain a gallery of such photos dated of course....

That is generous of you.

I recognise those yellow items, are they replacement strimmer blades?
