Hello Paul.

http://www.briggsandstratton.com/support/operators-manuals/

The link above will take you to Briggs and Stratton's website, from the support area you should be able to download operator manuals for their engines. However I had no luck using the numbers that you posted, perhaps you could re check your engine Model, Type and Code numbers before trying again.

When I am next in the workshop I will check the Briggs info that I have to see if there is anything there that may help you.

You've got a 5 hp engine made on the 25th of September 1975. In theory you will need a special tool to undo the starter clutch to remove the flywheel but with care you can improvise but if you wish, Briggs do a simple conversion to electronic ignition that can be done without having to remove the flywheel either to carry out the conversion or ever again. Part number  394970.

If you are going to do much work on your engine it could be worth buying the Single Cylinder L Head (side valve) Manual  - I think that the part number is 270962-1/95. Be aware that there  is also  post 1981 version 2970962-12/00 but this will have a lot of stuff that doesn't apply to your engine and does not cover stuff that you need such as points ignition.

Hi, all

Thanks very much for your help, you,ve made my weekend. I managed to get a manual from the briggs website by going into the frequentley asked questions bit where they show loads of older models only downside is i have to toddle off up the shed now to sort the engine out. I may be sometime.

Cheers all.

Good to hear that you got sorted, I had another look and found the older user manuals where you suggested, it's not as simple as it used to be on their site. I did find the info that you needed in my stuff but you have got there first.
