This short video explains the basics of how to add images to a forum posting. Written instructions are included below.
When you start a new forum topic or add a comment to an existing discussion you will see a panel in the middle of the screen that looks a bit like a word processor. This is the editing panel. Here you can type text and use a variety of simple formatting tools to change its appearance.
You can add images already on the server (ie already on the accessible part of the OLC website), from another location on the web (using a URL) or you can upload your own images. Read the following steps to find out how.
To add an image click on the icon on the left hand end of the second row (it's mountains with the sun or moon above). A new dialogue box "Image Properties" will appear.
A) If you want to include an image from another site all you need to do is add its URL address into the box. You will need to include the http:// bit.
B) You can also "Browse Server" to locate an image already on the website. Clicking this button will allow you to look for images and then select them. In the dialogue panel that appears go to the Navigation section on the left hand side. Here you will see a directory structure which includes "memberuploads" underneath which is "userX" where X is your own unique user number. Click on this. If you find the image you want, click on it to highlight it and then click on the "Insert Image" link at the top of the dialogue box. The system will then fill in the basic settings on the "Image Properties" panel. In general you can only browse to images contained in the "memberuploads" directory/folder or your own unique folder.
C) To upload an image to the server, click on the "Browse Server" button. In the dialogue panel that appears go to the Navigation section on the left hand side. Here you will see a directory structure which includes "memberuploads" underneath which is "userX" where X is your own unique user number. Click on this. Now at the top of the dialogue box you will see an "upload" link. Click on this and choose a file from your own computer to upload. You can also automatically generate small thumbnail versions as you do so. There are certain limitations to the size and number of files you can upload in one go but these are set to allow you to upload any image that will be suitable for the site. Larger files are also automatically sized for use on the site during uploads. Once you have uploaded your files to the "userX" location you can then add the images to your posts using method B as outlined above.
When you have selected your image you can add alternative text and set formatting such as width, height and so on. Bear in mind on this site that images over 400 pixels will spread over the right hand content column which is not good.
When you have set your formatting click on "OK" in the Image Properties dialogue and the image will appear in the editing panel.
Complete your posting as normal.
