ATCO Light weight misfire ??? .. help please

Hi there, I have a 1957 Atco Lightweight (14" cut).

It was incomplete when i got it, (see pic) ....so I have made one complete one out of two.

It has spark, and fresh 2 stroke in it.

(it has a newer type plug and lead on it, but has a good spark. I do have a good working older three pin type spark plug I could use, but didn't think that would be causing the misfire)

It is trying to start but is misfiring back through the carb, could you confirm my suspicions that this is a timing issue .... and if so, how do I "time up" the old girl ..

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Mike. In the margin on the left of this page, Click on Technical help. Then select general technical. then select villiers 2 stroke engine timing. you will then see a sentence with "here" highlighted in green. select that. The link below MIGHT take you straight to it!

Thanks Andy, ..... the flywheel has been on and off several times, so I will definitely check the points gap first, .... thanks for pointing out the link to the timing marks ....

 

I shall go tinker shortly and report back ... smiley

IT LIVES !!!!!

 

Well, got it running today, runs good, but then cuts out ....... tickle the carb, ... runs good ...... then cuts out ..... tickle the carb ....starts up, runs good ...... then dies........ you get the idea ..

Do you think i should whip the carb off and clean it out ?

 

The timing marks on mine were different to that detailed on here, mine is the aluminum flywheel type,  easy to do though, you have one mark on the back of the armature plate (in about the 4 O'clock position) ... you line this up with the arrow on  the flywheel casing with the motor set at TDC .....bingo bango,  fired up straight away.

Yup whip it off and give it a good blow through. Where the fuel line enters the carb is often blocked first. There may be the remains of a copper gauze filter in there. I've had crud block the hole where fuel enters the bowl too, so make sure the pin which is pushed by the float to stop the fuel is cleaned up also. (not a very technical description but I hope you get my drift!)

And then make sure the tank is not full of rust which will flow straight back in! While you are at it unscrew the fuel tap and make sure that's clean. If you have a copper fuel line give that a blow through. Simples smiley
