 Hello all

I have recently obtained an old photograph (1937) of a sidewheel mower which I thought was a Ransomes  Lion , Cub etc as it has the badge in the same position, But I can now just make out the raised lettering on the outside of the wheel & it appears to say ' The Davenrtry' .

Can anyone give any more info on this mower?

Thanks

Clive

Hello Clive and welcome to the Old Lawnmower Club,

Re the old photo that you have I have found reference to the Daventry in the OLC Lawnmower Directory. At the time of compiling the directory all that was known of the mower was a surving makers badge from a mower bearing the name Daventry plus a picture of an old fashioned radio speaker. No indication of age is given but reference is made of a possible connection between the picture of the radio speaker on the mower's badge and the fact that Daventry was one of the very early radio stations in the UK

Hopefully another club member may have more knowledge and be able to add to the info we have so far, it would appear that you may have a photo of a machine that not many people have actually seen unless someone can tell us differently of course!!

Is the photo of a size and quality that you could scan and post on to here?

Ray.

Hi,

Thanks for posting the picture,  it is a good clear picture so hopefully it may prompt a posting from one or more of our members (they are out there and hopefully they are watching) with more experience of mowers of this era than myself.

I can see from the shape of the badge at the base of the handle why your first thought was that it was a Ransomes mower,  this could still be the case if it turns out to be what was known as a catalogue mower where the mower or the major components of it were made by one of the major manufacturers but badged to the name of the selling company. As was the case with Gordon mowers that were sold by Timothy Whites and Taylor in their high street shops.

Regards,

Ray.

Here's a Daventry mower from one of our club member's collection. They are pretty rare in my experience.
