Electronic ignition unit for Suffolk Punch 35DL

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

Hello all - My father is searching for an electronic ignition unit for his Suffolk Punch 35DL.

All enquiries so far have put the price in the £50 to £95 bracket so I wonder if anyone can suggest a more reasonable option!

You can see a photo of the part here: http://imgur.com/CkOlZ

Any suggestions gratefully accepted!

Many thanks,

Iain

I also have need  (or think I do) for a replacement ignition for a Suffolk Punch type mower, its got a 24a engine I believe, so any advice would be welcome - would the above item be suitable for me also?

edit: I think it may be a super colt rather than a punch but I hope someone might help me!

There are two types of ignition for that particular engine, the older type ignition is fitted to the engines where the flywheel has less fins, and has an aluminium recoil starter. I can't find an example of this type of ignition system on eBay but if you were to look out for one it has a round stator plate.

The other type which is fitted to cast iron Suffolk engines with plastic recoil starters has a square stator plate and looks like this:

I believe the ignition system with the square stator plate would match the Super Colt, since I think the Super Colt is a later variation of the Colt. However I'm sure if your engine has the plastic recoil (the one that looks like this: http://www.the-pattersons.biz/ebay/images/Suffolk/Suffolk%20Recoil%20St…) then it'll be the type of ignition like the one I linked to on eBay.

Thanks very much for all your suggestions.

Unfortunately, the Gateshead Lawnmower Centre one isn't the correct part.

Cheapest I've been quoted so far is £50 from http://www.themowercentrehailsham.com/

All others are around the £90 mark.

I'm afraid £20 is about as much as I would stretch, so things don't look good.

Thanks very much once more.

Hi - dont give up the search yet you may find a second hand mower in your local small ads that could yeild some spare parts to get you mower going again.

Good luck

Ray.

Aled,

This is interesting - the suffolk super colt (you are correct in identifying the correct model before I had myself...) actually had a metal type starter, but has what I think you mean when you refer to the flywheel with more fins - its more silver in colour, and doesnt quite seem to be iron?

I have a plastic starter, and also what is definitely an iron flywheel (its got surface rust on it) also to hand.

Now I am unsure which bits were original - my dad may have played swapsies as he did have a siezed 98a engine on a mower at one point which im guessing is where the plastic starter, and the iron flywheel came from (the iron flywheel has a missing fin also).

My ignition seems to match the one in your first link, i.e. a standard type breaker ignition. Is there a breakerless ignition available for this engine or am I stuck with older tech?

For briggs engines there always seems to be the option!
