Collection, Preservation and Display of Old Lawn Mowers
I am looking for a throwplate (grass deflector) for a Ransomes Ajax I am restoring
hopefully someone will know of one somewhere
At the risk of stating the bloomin obvious it's a simple bit of "bent tin" - easy to reproduce.
People are always breaking Ajax on Ebay. A bit of patience should pay off. I imagine you are going for originality with a Mk 4 or Mk 5 as those ones are fluted and cannot reasonably be replicated at home.
" cannot reasonably be replicated at home "
Not sure about "reasonably" but quite possible with a bit of ingenuity. Looking at the spread of buy-it-now priced Ajaxes on the bay at present it's difficult to rationalise how the market values them.
I have just had one made for my Ransomes certes 14 inch out of 316 stainless steel. The British lawnmower museum kindly sent me the dimensions and a template of the one they have. Within my job role I have the opportunity to visit numerous fabrication companies and colleges and acquired the stainless at one of those companies. The safe edge was done by a folder and the curved bit was done on the brake press. The finished throw plate is an excellent fit and the polished stainless matches the lawnmower perfectly.
