hayteerette normal blade instead of disc?

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

Hey guys...just joined the site and have an interest in old mowers. I have an old flymo venturer 420xl which I have serviced and have been using for the last few years, but I have also got an old 1977 hayterette which I have almost finished restoring for my grandad to use!

My question is, would it be possible to replace the disc with the four small blades under the deck for a normal large single blade? I ask as I need to replace the four small blades, and so I am weighing up my options...I hope someone can help with this, as I am due a trip from suffolk down to devon in a few weeks when I am going to present it to him!

Hope someone can help! cheers guys!

The answer is yes, in fact it was an official option but I would stick with the disc as if the operator has the misfortune to hit an immovable object with the disc it is extremely unlikely that the engine crankshaft will be bent. The official Hayter bar blade kit used a friction disc to allow the bade to slip on impact but it didn't provide quite the same level of protection. Just fitting any old blade boss and bar blade without the disc is not recommended.

If you have not already removed the 4-blade disc, the difficulty in removing one that has been in place for a long time may well be the deciding factor!!
