Atco Kick Start Exhaust Removal

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could bestow some advice on me? I need to change the exhaust on the Villiers engine of my Atco kick start. I've removed the outside bolt which in turn has allowed me to remove the exhaust pipe but I can't see how it unbolts from the cylinder. There doesn't appear to be enough room to get a screwdriver in from the cylinder side and it doesn't seem to be enough room to put a spanner inside the exhaust after removing the pipe. There is a lot of sealer covering the exhaust from where someone has been trying to plug the leaks. Is there a trick to it or does something else need splitting down first to expose the nuts inside?

Hopefully someone will know for sure but I believe that originally the two domed end caps were removable giving access to the inside.

I'm more familiar with the the so-called pepper pot type of exhaust, although I do have a Villiers engine somewhere with that tubular type on it. I'll dig it out and see what's what.

Hi All,

The muffler is held on by a flange and two nuts that are on the inside of the muffler body. Consequently, you will need to take the ends off to get to the nuts.

Thank you. I didn't want to force it and break anything along the way but know that I know I'll have a play and see if I can get it to come apart.

Having removed all of the sealant I've managed to remove the two ends to the exhaust. It must have about 1/2" of soot in the bottom of it but apart from that it looks in good condition. I was wondering if there is a correctly way round to mount it as I noticed that the welding for joining it together is on the top but I'd have thought this would have been on the bottom. Should the pipe be pointing a certain way or is it just down to personal preference?
