BRL grinder attachments.

Afternoon guys,

I have a brl 2m grinder and I'm trying to track down the attachments for grinding the bottom blades.

Would anyone on here know of any going or someone who may be willing to sell them?

Picture attached of said grinder for reference.

Thanks

Ian.

I fear that the only source will be from another grinder that is being scrapped for another reason . The issue being that that those BRLs are built like the proverbial brick outhouse and there is little other than a catastrophic accident that would put them beyond use or repair. While the Brook motors are obsolete,  they are repairable.

On the brighter side it looks as though the head and tail stocks are of the same design as my 4M which suggests that the bottom blade / sole plate holding attachments will be of the same or similar,  design, so that widens the field a bit. If it will be of assistance I will take some images of the attachments and you could investigate having them made. The originals use some quite substantial castings but on a one off basis a competent engineer / machinist could duplicate their function if not the same construction.

That would be really helpful wristpin, my winter project is to get some made, on a previous post you have said your machine is same or similar to the one I have. I have been doing some research and so far I have concluded  I need a normal bearing that fits my cylinder then I need to get split collar to fit the outer diameter of the bearing and fit in the clamp which is around 60mm.  I have seen some engineering firms that make the adjustable spilt collars that could fit around a bearing and fit within the clamps of the brl. Could this work based on your experience and expertise . I would love to get hold of a spare you may have to help me make suitable ones. Happy to pay for shipping and send back to you once I have seen it and made one using the concept of it

I think that BRL supplied several of their models with possibly three thicknesses of collar that could be used singly or in combination to fit common imperial and metric bearings. They also supplied cups and cones  for machines using loose races. When I bought my machine, second hand , in 1979 most domestic machines were cylinder, add to that workload we were doing plenty of big commercial cylinder mowers, gang mowers and self propelled triples. Juggling the split collars was a bit of a pain so I had several sets of dedicated bearing holders made that were permanently fitted with bearings. I was fortunate in having a neighbour with a large lathe who’s day job was in a scrap yard that did a lot of factory clearances, that provided  a source of suitable off cuts.

I’ve  added to these over the years,  and although officially retired  am still adding to the collection. I’m seeing enough Dennis ( ex JP design) bowling green machines to justify a set of bearing holders and a dedicated driving attachment to reduce set- up time.

If you keep records of cylinder machines serviced and loose cylinders ground , do an analysis of your most used imperial and metric bearing sizes. Then make up your mind which way to go.

These are really good and gives me a good idea of what I need, really appreciated.

Just a couple of questions  Wristpin if I may,  is your clamp Diameter 60mm and when you clamp in the split collar with bearing inside  do they fully close the gap ?

Clamp diameter on my machine is 2.1/2” , nearer 64 mm. The split collar should have a small gap,say at least 1mm , when in the clamp and done up tight , to ensure that the bearing is gripped firmly . If the ends butt up there is a risk that the bearing may move.

Thanks to a message on here and a couple of phone calls I managed to track down the gentleman who owned BRL and luckily for me he still had a set of attachments in his unit and sold me those plus a bigger heavy duty spare set.

Was also very happy to discuss the machine in depth and give me some very handy tips so all in all a good deal.
