1) If this is the Tecumseh engine -  carburettor sticks out to the left of the engine as you stand at the handlebars- the governor mechanism inside the crankcase may have fallen apart.  Symptom is when off choke the smallest amount of throttle makes the engine rev like mad.  This is not great news I'm afraid Can also be carb to manifold or manifold to engine gasket failed/ bolts loose. Check bolts but do not over tighten. Oddly these are imperial size not metric

2) If it didnt gouge the turf before the plastic height adjuster (  numbererd  S to 5? )  may have broken.  Stand mower on paving slab , set to 5 and look at distance between the bottom blade and the slab. Then turn to 3 and note distance- then 2 and see how much nearer it is to the slab. If the blade is suddenly right down you need to look at the adjuster- should be availble still, but sort engine first

Hope this helps

Ronnie,
Regarding your Gouging problem, I have just repaired my Qualcast Classic 35 SQX which did the same to me as I was mowing my lawn, cutting lovely and suddenly dropped and skinheadedabout a metre of my lovely lawn before I got stopped. I found the Height Adjuster knob had gone very iffy and when I removed the side of the mower I found the shaft of the Adjuster Knob had sheared.
I ordered a new one from Amazon and it even came with a new spring, fitted and set my cut height and all great again.
I also earlier at the start of the mowing season had running issues with my AQ 148 Engine, had to leave the Choke permanently on to run correctly. Wristpin gave me good advice to clean the carburettor, which I did, also replaced the Air Cleaner element. On the Tecumseh 5148 Carb and the 59mm O Ring on the bowl is prone to degradation and cracking, again JAPG are good for parts. If you look at the rear of your engine the Governor is a long sort of T shaped Aluminium arm with a spring and a short linkage to the Tecumseh 5148, check the attachment of this Governor Arm.
