Exciting villiers magneto

The Atco light that I am rebuilding has no spark,I 've replaced the faulty coil with one of Taiwan's finest, replaced the condenser cleaned and gapped the points but still no spark. This happened on my last restoration and I seem to recall that I had to excite the magneto ,now do you actually earth the HT lead and spin it up with a drill or do you hold the lead away from earth so the spark can eventually jump, and finally how long should you run it for?

I’ve never heard of, or found, the need to do it for a flywheel magneto as the residual magnetism is supplied by the permanent magnets in the flywheel .
