Honda HC20 cylinder mower

Enter a word or two to search the forum section and click the Search Forum button.

Hello,

I am Bert from The Netherlands and I have a lawn of +/- 5.500 square feet. Recently I bought an old Honda HC20 cylinder mower with GX110 engine to use beside my Honda HR216 rotary mower with GX(V) 160 engine.

I want to repaint the Honda HC20 and sharpen the blades before I use the mower. The only problem is that there is no documentation of this mower. I contacted Honda in different countries, but non of them could give me technical information such as parts diagrams, partsnumbers, etc.. I think this mower is produced under licence.

I can read the following information on the mower:

Model: HC20

Serial number: 0401251

Honda produced in UK by Sporcan LTD Birmingham

Can someone help me to find technical information about this type of mower?

I think that the clue is in " Honda produced in UK by Sporcan LTD Birmingham " . In that it was made for Honda to sell in the UK by a sub-contractor.My memory is a bit hazy but I believe that for a while Flymo sold a similar design of  cylinder mower. I also recollect that, over time and  just to complicate matters,   Honda had two different designs  and possibly suppliers for their badged cylinder mowers.

It is possible that your best shot will be to contact a UK Honda dealer who may have been familiar with the machine and have parts lists .

I know that some of the Honda cylinder mowers were made by Wolseley Webb, but I think that the HC20 was a rebadged Morrison/Masport.

A picture might help in identification.

Thank you for your answers. I was a couple of days out of town (holiday), so excuse for my late reply.

I will post some pictures before the weekend. I hope you can help me when you see the pictures.

Here are some pictures of the mower. As you can see on the last picture, the 2 mounting screws for the side panel / chain cover are located on the left and right under side of the big chain ring. This is where a lot of cylinder mowers who looks the same differ from each other. I also found pictures of a Husqvarna Brilliant 500 and I think that is the same model to.

I think that it is safe to say  that your machine is not the version based on the Webb design. Definitely has the Morrison look about it  and I would venture to suggest that it was originally a Morrison design but could well have been manufactured in the U.K. by Sporcan - as per your first post. Quite what else Sporcan did , I have no idea but a Companies House search shows that the company was dissolved over 30 years ago.

My guess is that the Husqvarna that you refer to was another badged machine and as Husqvarna and Flymo were both Electrolux brands, the Flymo badged cylinder mower most probably came from the same source.

EDIT

Here's the info on the Flymo range.. Note the info on page five regarding the switch to a left hand thread for the cutting cylinder sprocket - as found on the Morrison machines.

Hello Bert,

I agree with Wristpin.  The arrangement of chains and sprockets in your photo look the same as on my Morrison mowers.  See an example photo below.

Morrison chain and sprocket arrangement

There are available some manuals on Morrison mowers. Although they are for later models than the ones I have much of the engineering is the same.  See for example  http://www.lankhaartechniek.nl/cms/upload/manual/OPC-Reel-Mowers-RRR-sp… (from a Dutch website!)

Not sure how much this will help you with painting and sharpening but good luck.

No, it wasn't made in the UK, it was made in New Zealand, but not by Morrison/Masport, it was made by a company called Steelfort, who badge them as Lawnmasters.

Thank you for all your replys, and research.

And guess what! yesterday I contacted Husqvarna The Netherlands for documentation of their Husqvarna Brilliant mowers because this machine looks the same as the Honda HC20. @ hours ago I received a reply and they said that Husqvarna did not have information of it, but the give me the information of Lankhaar Techniek. Is that funny or what? I have just e-mailed them, so i am waiting for their answere.

Steefort rings a distant bell with me but going back to the original question  - if it was made in New Zealand why does its id label state made in Birmingham?

"Model: HC20, Serial number: 0401251, Honda produced in UK by Sporcan LTD Birmingham"

Just to throw another variable into the mix. This cylinder mower was sold by EP Barrus in around 2007 as the TD 500H and TD 660H. Compare the shape of the grass box brackets and the handle bar configuration with the Flymo branded machine from 1990.

Googling Steelfort produces this

Probably the only thing made in the UK was the label that said it was made in the UK laugh

Badge engineering is rife in the lawnmower industry and always has been. You could buy the first proper line trimmer under several different names and colours, the only eal difference being the name decals. It is going on today, Homebase sell Qualcast machines, because it sounds better than 'Homebase mowers'

Hello, I am Rico from London. I was also searching for some basic information on aa Honda HC16, (the smaller version) and saw this post. Finding nothing, I had to resort to my 'Archives' (not my favourite thing), but seeing Bert's post, persistence was fruitful. I found the original manuals supplied with the mower covering mower and engine. Regret these are not service manuals but may be helpful nonetheless. I have scanned and published the version for GB. and make these available for this site.                                  The manuals from this mower were labelled ' by Sporcan LTD'

If the service manuals are required I suggest a call to http://www.gaywaysltd.co.uk/ as they still exist acting as a local distributor and service agent. Best of luck
