Hello everyone,

I have just joined the Old Lawnmower club after recently purchasing an old Royal Enfield mower. I would like to find out some information about the mower and what parts I require to get it running.

Firstly I would like to try and find out the age of the mower, I think it is a pre WW2 one with the Villiers engine? The only numbers I can find are 14   401.  These are stamped on the engine. I presume it means 14 inch, which it is, and possibly 1940 manufacture?

The parts missing ( apart from a grass box, which may still be found by the previous owner ) are the fuel tap connection, fuel pipe and the connection to the Villiers carburettor. I have bought a 1/4 BSP brass fitting that screws into the fuel tap and it fits but I am unsure about the carburettor end? is it some sort of banjo fitting? It requires a female fitting of some sort that screws onto a thread. Also I think the flywheel cover is missing? The mower does not run at the moment but it turns over freely.

The points don't seem to open and close so I thought I might adjust them and hopefully I may get a spark?

I will try and attach a couple of pictures of the mower.

I look forward to hearing from anyone with any information, help or advice.

Welcome to the club Jerry, a great mower and possibly the one I missed out on. Hope you get it running, unfortunately I'm not mechanically minded, nor an Enfield expert, but I'm sure you'll have an answer soon from other club members. But for now hello and welcome.

I have now bought the fuel pipe and connections for the mower from villiersparts.co.uk   All parts fitted perfectly. The next stage is to adjust the points so that they open and close properly and then hopefully I will get a spark.

I have some mineral two stroke oil which I will mix with petrol. Hopefully the mower will be started in the next couple of weeks.

It will be really interesting to try and find out a date of manufacture for the mower.

Thanks to everyone that has given me advice and help so far.

Hi Jerry,

Great looking machine - lovely original patina! I have a Royal Enfield too, purchased in 2019. In case it helps, the numbers on my engine are 14 784 and it has been dated by Clive on this forum as October 1947.

Will post a few photos. Please let me know if I can be of help, if you need photos or close-ups for reference don't hesitate to contact me.

My own machine had been restored when I bought it so the colour is not original. The transfers I bought from the club. Yours is so nice I'd just give it a wipe with an oily rag.

Cheers

Alec

The mower will be kept in it's original condition. I really like the paint and the original transfers as fitted when it was made.

I'm even hoping that the old spark plug gets to spark once again.

Hello everyone,

I am hoping to get this old Royal Enfield mower going in the next couple of weeks. It all looks good and ready to run. I just need to buy some petrol to mix with my mineral two stroke oil.

I still can't find out the date of manufacture? I really would like to know whether it is pre WW2 or just after?
