Play between rear roller drum and inner spindle carrier (it floats slightly)?!

Hi All,

I have acquired a nice old Suffolk Super Colt mower and am in the process of giving it a good going over and a coat of paint. I need some advice on the rear roller drum please.

The rear drum has the spindle carrier wheel in one end (the bit that drives it). It looks like the spindle wheel is pressed inside the drum by four flattened spots that grip it. However, there's quite a bit of play and the spindle wheel moves in relation to the outer drum, rattling loudly as the mower goes along.

I was going to apply a bit of weld to secure it in place properly, but before I do I wondered if it's supposed to be like this for some reason, to allow a degree of float in the rear roller?

Any opinions or advice would be much appreciated!!

Thanks,

Al

Hi, and welcome to the Old Lawnmower Club.

If I have the right part in mind I think you are talking about the ring gear that is secured into the  end of the roller. If this is correct then I have in the past successfully tightened these by peening over the rolled edge with a hammer to pinch the gear wheel firmly again. Check before welding that the gear is not cast iron otherwise give it a try and see what happens.

Good luck with the restoration

Ray.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the reply!

Yes that's exactly the bit I'm talking about. It's definitely steel so I'll carry on and weld it.

Thanks for your help.
