Hi folks,

some weeks ago I've won an old cylinder mower from an ebay member here in Germany.

Sadly the mower has no label or any other hint regarding it's make.

It has fitted a Villiers four-stroke petrol engine.

I wonder why this machine has rubber coated drive wheels when others like ATCOs, Ransomes or Qualcasts have only drive rollers. Never seen a british-made mower like this.

Does anybody has an idea of which make this mower could be??

Thanks and kind regards,

Andreas

Hello there,

I'm pretty sure your machine is an Atco Toughcut, though the one I have seen photo's of had a BSA 'sloper' engine. The Toughcut is somewhat similar to Ransomes Gazelle and later Antelope. I suggest your's dates from the early 1960's but maybe someone else can come up with further information.

I would also say ATCO Toughcut, they're not very popular machines since they would've been used commercially, a lot would have been wrecked and thrown away. Seems from the photos to be in fairly good nick, so I'd take care of it if I were you.

ATCO share a lot of parts between machines, giveaways are the clutch mechanism, fuel tank and the side cover, I've seen this mower in a book but never seen one in real life (yet).

Cheers

Hi all!

Thanks for your prompt reply!

This machine is indeed in a good condition but sadly it has no spark.

After having dismantled the ignition unit and taking a resistance measurement

I found that at least the coil and the capacitor have defect.

My question: are parts still available?

I'm currently on holiday in the South East of England for a few days and have the ignition unit with me.

So if there's somebody with parts "on stock" I could drop in.

Thanks in advance!

Andreas
