Exhaust Removal from Suffolk Punch MKVII
Hi.... I'm a newbie to the OLC.
I'm trying to remove the exhaust from my newly acquired Suffolk Punch 14" MKVII as there are rust holes in it, but despite many doses of PlusGas I can't get the hexagonal nut to loosen from the back of the cylinder block. In fact one side of the nut has rounded off. There isn't enough room to fit a pair of Stillsons on the nut as the exhaust comes out of the block at 45deg so I've been trying with an adjustable spanner.
Does anyone have any tips for me please?

Be very careful but I have
Be very careful but I have tried removing these nuts and the only success I have had is carefully drill a hole on one of the nut flat faces and use a sharp chisel o split the nut it is possible to drill a second hole on the opposite flat face to make it easier
it destroys the nut but will give yoy a little more space to get pipe grips in
Without oxy acetylene I think
Without oxy acetylene I think that you unlikely to remove the stub pipe from the block in one bit or to preserve the muffler.
By all means drill and split the nut . Then cut off the muffler leaving as much as possible of the pipe proud of the block - NOT flush. Then wrap some tape around a new hacksaw blade a couple of inches from one end with the teeth facing towards you . Insert it into the stub , pull it back towards you and repeat until you have cut a slot through the pipe. Yes, it will also cut into the block but it won’t harm it. Then, and this is where you need the protruding stub, use Mole or Vice grips to crush it into itself. Problem solved !
A bit late to say leave it
A bit late to say leave it alone but the chances are that you will destroy it trying to shift it . If you know anyone with oxy acetylene who can get some intense localised heat onto the nut you may be able to shift it. Anything else such as a Mapp or propane torch tends to spread the heat around and risks collateral damage.
As the nut is *** already you may as well attack it with a cold chisel and a lump hammer and see if you can get it on the move.
