Atco 24 Royale Professional

Hi all,

Picked up a Royale 24 in a sorry state in need of some TLC. I’ve not seen it running but nothing seems seized and the engine seems to have compression. Planning on removing carb, air filter etc. and give it a once over. The fuel tank is rusty (any tips on cleaning appreciated) and you can’t seem to buy them anymore?

None of the tags/labels are on the mower but looking at the outline where the old stickers used to be, it is a Professional I think.

Engine is a B&S IC 5HP and looks like it’s from 1988.

Plans are to see if I can get it running, and then think about trying to tidy it up. It’s probably overkill from what I need in a lawn mover, but the price was good and worth a punt.

Its been painted before (badly) so that will  need sorting if it is a runner.

Expect I’ll be asking a few questions along the way, unless I can find the answers here already.

Always wanted to own a classic - didn’t expect it to be a lawnmower though!

Thanks, Ross

A good basic machine as an introduction to useable Classics. The basic design still exists as the Allett Buckingham.

Fuel tank . Every one has has their own favoured  tank cleaning method. Hopefully it’s just internal surface rust and has not been sitting around with water in it and now has perforations. Assuming that the tank is structurally sound - one method is to add some  gravel or even nuts and bolts plus a bit of non flammable liquid and give it a good shake to loosen surface rust. Follow with some proprietary rust converter to kill any remaining rust.

My usual method is to use electrolysis and you should be able to find my posts on this method on this forum.

Doesn’t look as there was not much prep work before the DIY paint job, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble in revealing the original Atco green !
